1945 Double Dilute Stallion

5/29/2024

Midweek color history tidbit from the Richmond Times Dispatch on July 27, 1945. An "albino" stallion is mentioned in a report from that year's Pony Penning. There used to be wild pony rides as part of the festivities, or how long could spectators ride a wild pony. One spectator won the contest on the "albino stallion". Double dilutes were and are often called albinos so it's extremely likely this unknown stallion was a double cream dilute. Maybe we'll find out more about him eventually!

Historical Pony: Snowball

5/25/2024

Double dilutes have a long history on Assateague and this mare is one of them. This is Snowball who my friend Deb Noll photographed in the early 1980s. I think I've spotted her in a book photo or two also. It appears she was called Cotton by researcher Ronald Keiper during his study of Chincoteague Ponies in the 1970s.

There are three types of double dilutes and they all generally look the same so there's no way of knowing which she was. Snowball has the very pale cream coat color, pink skin, and bluegreen eyes that are the characteristics of double dilutes. In one of the books I think I spotted her in she has a buckskin pinto foal and the stallion she's running in behind is a chestnut pinto. If that stallion was the sire of her foal than she would have been a perlino or a smoky cream. If he wasn't then who knows!

Historical Ponies: Buttercup's 2001 & 2002 Foals

The solid buckskin mare Buttercup produced these two double dilute foals by solid sooty buckskin Gunner's Moon. They were born in back to back years, a filly in 2001 and a colt in 2002.

Double dilutes have two copies of the cream dilution which results in their unique color. There are three types cremello (chestnut based), perlino (bay based), and smoky cream (black based). The three double dilutes usually look the same with a pale cream coat, bluegreen eyes, and pink skin. Color testing is the only sure way to know which one of the three types they are. The exception being that a double dilute from palomino parents can only be a cremello.

When it comes to these two it's more likely they are perlinos or smoky creams due to their parents both being buckskin. But we know from their parents other foals that they both carried recessive chestnut so that leaves cremello in the running.

Tested Pony: Wave Runner's Artistic Expression

5/15/2024

The previous two featured tested ponies are the parents of this flashy 2023 filly. This is Wave Runner's Artistic Expression, nicknamed Sue. She was born at Wave Runner Chincoteague Ponies in Ohio and is now owned by Chincoteague Ponies at Hart’s Island Pony Ranch in Minnesota. You can follow Sue on her own facebook page Wave Runner’s Artistic Expression - Chincoteague Pony. She hadn't been at her new home long when I met her and she's grown up quite a bit!

Sue is very flashy and has much more white than her parents. This is because she has two copies of Splashed White 1 or as her test showed SW1/SW1. Both of her parents have SW1 and both of them passed it on to her. Statistically that will happen 25% of the time. Because she has two copies Sue will pass on splashed white to all her foals. She's pretty typical looking of a homozygous splashed white 1. It has a distinctive look and is very different looking from tobiano. Homozgyous splashed whites have 2 blue eyes like she does. Sue has a 3/4 sister Shenandoah Shamal who is also homozygous splashed white.
She tested as e/e since she's a chestnut. Because both of Sue's parents are chestnut she couldn't be anything but a chestnut. Sue's sire Phantom doesn't carry agouti and her dam Kenzie has two copies so predictably Sue tested as having one copy or A/a.
