Whisper of Living Legend was born in 2000 and was the Misty-like pony in the herd for most of her life. Her sire was the half Arabian North Star and her dam was the smoky black tobiano Living Legend. Her dam was previously featured here: https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/.../historical... Her old ID number was A96. She had two buybacks, lookalike daughter Trinity of Legend's Whisper in 2005 and her next to last foal in 2018 CLG Rumor Has It. Her buyback donor family, the Moore's, were the donors of both her dam and her daughter Trinity. Quite a few of Whisper's foals had health issues, and not a lot of them lived to full adulthood. The exact why this happened is still unclear. The foals sired by her half uncle Courtney's Boy seemed to have the most issues. She passed away in 2021 and I was glad to have seen her the fall before. Whisper was another pony I watched all her life and I still can't quite believe is gone. A palomino is a chestnut with one copy of the cream dilution. Statistically she should have passed cream on to half of her foals and indeed 6 of her 13 foals were palomino. She passed chestnut on to all of them, 6 of her foals were chestnut sired by chestnut stallions. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/chestnut.html https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/palomino.html Only one of her foals wasn't chestnut and he was a bay pinto sired by bay pinto Wild Thing. She probably didn't carry agouti, but with most all of her foals being by chestnut stallions there's no way to know for sure. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/bay.html She was a flashy tobiano pinto and quite a few cat tracks. Both of her parents were tobiano pinto and it appears they both passed tobiano on to her. All of Whisper's foals were tobiano pinto so she was likely homozygous tobiano, aka had two copies. Homozygous tobiano pintos are more likely to have cat tracks and a lot of them so that lines up with her. However it's not always fullproof, homozygous tobianos don't always have cat tracks and occasionally a heterozygous will have some. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/tobiano.html https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/cattracks.html I always thought it was interesting that she had mapping on her white markings. Misty’s Morning Glory is a 2001 great great granddaughter of Misty. Her sire is chestnut tobiano Cezanne who was born in Assateague in 1989. Her dam is Misty’s Black Mist, daughter of Misty II, who had a Breyer model in the late 90’s. Glory is a longtime member of the Chincoteague Pony Drill Team. Her full brother Misty’s Irish Mist is also on the team. Glory’s daughter Misty’s Red Dawn currently lives at Kentucky Horse Park’s Breed Barn. I’ve already tested her and you can look back and see her results. I've known Glory since she was about a couple months old so now she makes me feel old! Misty’s Morning Glory’s test results: a/a, E/e, nd1/nd2, SW1/n, TO/n, EDXW1/n, EDXW3/EDXW3 Glory is black with recessive chestnut, a/a & E/e. The chestnut she inherited from her chestnut sire. Her daughter Dawn was sired by a dark bay and is a bright red chestnut in contrast to her parents. Her first son is a black like her and her second son is a bay with the agouti inherited from his sire. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/black.html She has one copy of non-dun1 which can cause primitive markings. Both of Glory’s parents are tobiano but only one parent passed it on to her because she has one copy. Her daughter Dawn also tested as having SW1 so not too much of a surprise. I’d guessed Glory had SW1 because of her blue eye. I think the SW1 comes from her sire Cezanne....maybe. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/splash.html Now for the surprising part of her results! Glory is the first Chincoteague to test as having Eden White 1. I don’t know which side of her family EDXW1 came from. She’s also the first to test as having two copies of Eden White 3. That tells me that both of her parents had EDXW3. Since they’ve both died I can’t test them so it’s great to have that kind of info. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/eden-white.html   Chief Golden Eagle is a palomino stallion born in 2008. His sire was buckskin tobiano Glacier who was last week's featured historical pony. His dam was the solid chestnut Beautiful Dreamer. The Golden Eagle part of his name comes from a nickname for the late stallion Cinnamon Hologram. Chief's had two sons kept for the herd; Thunderbolt and CLG Ember's Golden Flame. He's had five daughters kept; Shy and Sassy Sweet Lady Suede, Two Teague's Golden Girl, Chili, CLG Cowboy Kisses, and Angeliques Tigress Warrior. Chief inherited chestnut from both of his parents in order for him to be a palomino. Beautiful Dreamer was a chestnut herself and Glacier carried it recessively. He passes one copy of chestnut on to all of his foals. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/chestnut.html Interestingly Chief appears to have two copies of the bay causing agouti. He's never sired a black foal and has sired a bay out of his black mare CLG Ember. His color tested foals have all had agouti, including Ember's Master Chief whose test results I featured a while back. We can't see Chief's agouti since it only affects black pigment so we have to rely on offspring or testing. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/bay.html Chief has one copy of the cream dilution to make him a palomino. He inherited it from his buckskin sire. Chief passes that cream on to his foals statistically 50% of the time. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/palomino.html He tends to sire darker palominos despite not being super dark himself. They're not sooty though, just a darker shade. Color shade isn't something we know a lot about yet. Chief's often darker palomino foals lends to a theory that sometimes shade is inherited. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/colorshade.html   Glacier only spent around 5 years as part of the Chincoteague herd but he left a large impact behind. Glacier was born into the Maryland herd in 1993 and had the Keiper number N6BJR. His sire was the palomino pinto Trigger and his dam the bay tobiano Kelly. Glacier didn't have any recorded offspring in Maryland. He was photographed in 2003 at spring roundup and his ownership was transferred to the CVFC in 2004. Glacier was renamed Twister in the old registry. He was often mistaken for fellow buckskin tobiano stallion Tornado. Glacier's only buyback was a signification one, the 2008 stallion Chief Golden Eagle. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/assateague-horses... Glacier was a bay with the cream dilution carrying recessive chestnut. He inherited chestnut from his palomino sire and bay from his bay dam. If we didn't know what color his parents were his palomino foals like Chief Golden Eagle tell us he had recessive chestnut. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/bay.html https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/chestnut.html The cream dilution that Glacier had, and his son still passes on, is unrelated to the other cream dilutes in Virginia. It's almost extinct in Maryland. Glacier's half sister Coco, through their sire, is the last cream dilute in the Maryland herd. But thankfully this line is alive and well in Virginia thanks to Glacier. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/buckskin.html   Prince Caspian of Chincoteague is a 2025 gelding born on Assateague. His sire is bay pinto Henry's Hidalgo and his dam is buckskin pinto Molly's Rosebud, both are still on Assateague. His full brother Rose Bud's Romeo is a chestnut so not a big surprise Caspian carries chestnut. Both of their parents have a chestnut parent so we already knew they carried it recessively. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/black.html You may have noticed that Caspian is kind of a weird looking black. I noticed that about him right away and I guessed his was a smoky black. His test came back that he is! Smoky black means he carries one copy of the cream dilution which he inherited from his buckskin dam. Not all smoky blacks look odd like him, but it seems to be a pretty good indicator when they are a bit funky looking. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/smokyblack.html He has one copy of non-dun1 and one copy of non-dun2. Non-dun1 can cause ponies to have primitive markings and non-dun2 can cause them to not. So either is possible in Caspian's case. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/primitivemarkings.html Caspian is tobiano pinto and like both of his parents and his test showed he got a copy from each of them. So he's homozygous tobiano or TO/TO. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/tobiano.html You may be wondering where Caspian's blue eyes came from. Not sure! I expected him to have splashed white 1 since it's in his sire's family. Didn't have any of the eden whites either. While it's surprising it's not entirely unexpected that there's something unknown in the herd. With over 40 pinto patterns currently testable we know for sure there's more out there to be found!
