Tested Pony: Coastal Cowgirl

7/19/2025

Coastal Cowgirl, nicknamed Misty, is a 2024 palomino tobiano daughter of bay tobiano Ajax and buckskin tobiano Badabing. Both of her parents still live on Assateague and she has four full siblings. Misty lives at Rose of Sharon Ranch in Arkansas. Thanks to her owner Colleen for sharing her results!

As a palomino Misty is a chestnut with one copy of the cream dilution. Both of Misty's parents are bay based carrying recessive chestnut. Each of them have a chestnut based parent so that's where chestnut came down to Misty.

Her test showed that she has two copies of agouti. Since both of her parents are bay based she likely inherited a copy from each. Agouti only affects black, creating bays, so it has nothing to do on a palomino like Misty. So the only way to know she was homozygous for agoui was through testing.

Cream dilutes Misty's chestnut to palomino. She only has one copy which comes from her buckskin dam Badabing. Cream then came from her dam's sire Tornado's Prince of Tides.

Both of Misty's parents are tobiano but she tested as TO/n so she only has one copy.

She's a very light shade of palomino. There may be a genetic component to shade but right now we don't know.

Surfer's Riptide

7/16/2025

Surfer's Riptide, better known as just Riptide, is a 2009 stallion living on Assateague. Breyerfest is this weekend and he was honored with a Breyer model this year. His parents were the chestnuts Surfer Dude and Surf Queen. He has 6 daughters currently living on Assateague.

Riptide is a chestnut like both of his parents. He passes a copy of chestnut on to all of his foals, whether they are chestnut or not.

https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/chestnut.html

He has sired 13 black foals so far, three out of black mares. The only bay foals he's sired have been out of bay mares. It's a small sample but it appears he may not have a copy of agouti.

Riptide carries one copy of Splashed White 1. That's what gives him his socks and flashy blaze. He inherited SW1 from his sire Surfer Dude. While he has not been tested, several foals and siblings have been tested to have SW1. Even if they hadn't we have another clue in that he's sired two homozygous splashed whites. They are very distinctive and both parents must have SW1 for a foal to be one. It only happens about 1/4 times so it can take a while for one to pop up!

https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/splash.html

He may also have Eden White 3 as one of his daughters and a nephew have been tested to have it.

https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/eden-white.html

One of Riptide's most distinctive features is his blonde mane and tail. This is from flaxen. We don't know how flaxen is inherited yet but we can see that it is genetic with Riptide's family and his offspring. Multiple foals of his are flaxen. His sire Surfer Dude was flaxen and so are many of his siblings.

Another distinctive feature is his dark chestnut coat. It appears this comes from sooty. He has quite a few sooty relatives. Sooty is another where we know that it's inherited somehow, but not how. His sire Surfer Dude, Surfer Dude's dam Gremlin, and Gremlin's unnamed dam were all sooty chestnuts.

Historical Pony: Blonde

Blonde, aka Blondie, was one of the most recognizable ponies of the 90's. She was born in 1989 or 1990 and her parents are unknown. Her old identification number that was branded on her shoulder was A25. Blonde lived a good long life on Assateague and died in 2006. She was such a fixture for so many years she's one I still kind of expect to see even though she's been gone for 19 years. Her only known foal kept in the herd was Tidewater Treasure was part of the Assateague herd from 2018 to 2022. When I visit Treasure in her retirement I think about her dam sometimes. Blonde's granddaughter Tidewater's Reflection of Ace had her first foal in May. I found it :)

Blondie was very obviously a double dilute. She had the pale near white coat, light blue eyes, and pink skin. Even though we don't know her parents, both of them had to have been cream dilutes. Double dilutes have to inherit one copy of the cream dilution from both parents. Cream dilutes are called an incomplete dominant, which means that a pony with one copy looks different than a pony with two copies.
https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/doubledilute.html

The three types of double dilute usually all visually look the same. Thanks to her offspring we know that Blondie was a black based Smoky Cream or a bay based Perlino. She had at least 7 buckskin or smoky black foals with chestnut stallions. She had to have contributed the bay or black since the sire couldn't. Also, one of her parents had to have been a buckskin or a smoky black.

https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/smokyblack.html

Blonde carried a copy of recessive chestnut. Her 2004 foal was a palomino which could only happen if she carried chestnut.
https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/palomino.html

One of her smokey black foals had a very obvious dorsal stripe so she may have had non-dun1. Even though she didn't have a dorsal stripe herself.

Ancestry Testing: Chincoteague's Travelin' Preacher

7/6/2025

I'm currently out of color tested ponies to feature so I thought I'd share some interesting breed test results in the meantime. These are the results of Chincoteague's Travelin' Preacher who is a full brother to island stallion WH Windy's Beach Boy and past mare WH Wildfire. This kind of testing can vary some between siblings due to the randomness of inheritance but it would be similar.

As you can see he is nearly 50% of Near East, which is Arabian and Akhal Teke. This wasn't too surprising as he has a good bit of Arabian in his pedigree including two Arabian great grandsires. His % is higher than most Chincoteagues that have been tested.

His next highest group is European Heavy Horse. This is common with many Chincoteagues that have been tested. A lot of it appears to come from the Maryland herd, of which he has an ancestor. He also has a Paint Horse ancestor that may contribute to this category.

Most Chincoteagues have 0-5% of Thoroughbred blood, but Preacher has 11.1%. This is from his half Thoroughbred ancestor Windy, he descends from her twice. The tested Chincoteagues descended from Windy have all had a higher percentage of Thoroughbred blood than the rest.

Preacher is pushing 15 hands and looking at his breeding you can definitely see why!
