Blonde, aka Blondie, was one of the most recognizable ponies of the 90's. She was born in 1989 or 1990 and her parents are unknown. Her old identification number that was branded on her shoulder was A25. Blonde lived a good long life on Assateague and died in 2006. She was such a fixture for so many years she's one I still kind of expect to see even though she's been gone for 19 years. Her only known foal kept in the herd was Tidewater Treasure was part of the Assateague herd from 2018 to 2022. When I visit Treasure in her retirement I think about her dam sometimes. Blonde's granddaughter Tidewater's Reflection of Ace had her first foal in May. I found it :)
Blondie was very obviously a double dilute. She had the pale near white coat, light blue eyes, and pink skin. Even though we don't know her parents, both of them had to have been cream dilutes. Double dilutes have to inherit one copy of the cream dilution from both parents. Cream dilutes are called an incomplete dominant, which means that a pony with one copy looks different than a pony with two copies. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/doubledilute.html The three types of double dilute usually all visually look the same. Thanks to her offspring we know that Blondie was a black based Smoky Cream or a bay based Perlino. She had at least 7 buckskin or smoky black foals with chestnut stallions. She had to have contributed the bay or black since the sire couldn't. Also, one of her parents had to have been a buckskin or a smoky black. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/buckskin.html https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/smokyblack.html Blonde carried a copy of recessive chestnut. Her 2004 foal was a palomino which could only happen if she carried chestnut. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/palomino.html One of her smokey black foals had a very obvious dorsal stripe so she may have had non-dun1. Even though she didn't have a dorsal stripe herself. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/primitivemarkings.html
