LZS Mark's Island Liberty was born in 2002 and died in 2010. She's only one of two foals of the buckskin half Arabian Copper Moose kept for the herd. Her dam was the bay tobiano Carol's Little Freedom. Liberty only had three foals but left a long legacy on the island through her first foal 15 Friends of Freckles who currently has 4 daughters living on Assateague.
Liberty was a bay like her dam. And her sire was a bay with the cream dilution. All three of her foals were also bay and sired by the chestnut North Star. It's not enough foals to know for sure, but it's possible she was homozygous for black and/or for agouti. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/bay.html She was a tobiano pinto like her dam. Even though her foals were all tobiano she couldn't be homozygous for tobiano because her sire was solid. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/tobiano.html Liberty likely had splashed white pinto or another pinto pattern. She doesn't really look like she does, but her dam Carol's Little Freedom and her daughter 15 Freckles each had a blue eye. We don't have any testing data on the family to find out what is causing the occasional blue eyes. Splashed white and other pinto patterns are dominant, they can't skip generations. Sometimes you can't really see or tell that a pinto pattern is there, but when it comes to inheritance it's still dominant. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/splash.html She had some tobiano roaning, mostly in her interesting roaned star. This is likely from tobiano as they often have roaning. Tobiano and roans (that are testable) have been found on the same gene, KIT. https://www.thecolorfulchincoteague.com/roaning.html
