Historical Pony: Miracle Man

Miracle Man was born in 1995 and was found as an orphan in Black Duck Marsh. He was in poor shape and was nursed back to health by the Leonard family. That's how he came by the name Miracle Man. He was paraded during the auction in 1996. He was released on Assateague as an adult and died March 2013. Since Miracle Man was an orphan we have no idea who his parents are. I have an educated guess as to his sire, a stallion whose name is currently unknown, due to some physical resemblance and timing. Miracle Man had six daughters kept as part of the herd on Assateague: Summer Breeze, Wildest Dreams (recently featured), Miracle's Natural Beauty, Seaside Miracle, May's Grand Slam, and Millennium Midnight who joined the herd for a couple years. He's had six granddaughters and one grandson kept from four of those daughters.

Miracle Man was a bay and he appears to have sired at least one black so he was probably A/a, aka one copy of the bay causing agouti. Or that one black foal wasn't his because he sired many bays. Similarly, he only had one chestnut foal recorded. So either that foal wasn't his or he carried recessive chestnut. When figuring out feral ponies things are not always clear!

He was quite a dark bay, something passed on to many of his offspring. Maybe sooty or maybe he was a dark shade. The genetics on both of these is unknown so we can just guess.

Miracle Man was a flashy tobiano pinto. Usually when a pony has that many cat tracks that means they have two copies of tobiano, aka homozygous for tobiano. But he's recorded as having 4 non-tobiano foals. Homozgous tobianos foals are all tobiano. Given these are feral ponies it's possible those 4 aren't his or maybe they are.

Only one of his foals has been DNA tested, Millennium Midnight, who has previously been featured. She was positive for Eden White 3 so it's possible he was as well.
