Want to color test your pony and don't know where to start? This page will walk you through the process. Color testing is relatively uncommon in the breed so every tested pony helps us expand our knowledge!
First step is the testing labs. Their websites will list the tests they offer and the cost for each. Sometimes one lab will have a test another doesn't. The International Chincoteague Pony Association and Registry has partnered with Etalon Diagnostics.

Next, get the genetic material from your pony. Testing involves pulling mane or tail hairs with the root attached and mailing it to the lab. The hair root contains the genetic material. Hair that's cut can't be tested. The lab will have a form to fill out with information about your pony and where to place the pulled hairs.
What test to choose? Decide what you want to know.
-If you want a full picture of a pony's genetic makeup then choose a panel test. Panels group multiple tests together for one cost. A panel test might also turn up something that hasn't been found in Chincoteagues yet!
-If there's a specific color you want to know about then you can purchase a single or a couple or a few tests.

The results report you receive from the lab will explain what the results mean. Colors are shortened to a code. For example my pony's color genetic makeup is: A/a, E/e, nd2/nd2, TO/n. An "n" means your pony does not have that color. A color code and an "n" means your pony only has one copy of a color, such as TO/n. A color code listed twice means your pony has two copies of a color, such as TO/TO.
