Sabino roan is a characteristic of the sabino pinto pattern. Sabino is a broad term for a large group of pinto patterns. The type of sabino that was found in Chincoteagues was characterized by roaning all over the body and white markings on the legs and face. Occasionally there was a belly spot. The edges of the leg markings were jagged/lacey looking and that indicated sabino. The ponies had wide blazes and one mare's blaze curled around the edge of her face. Many of the foals of Chincoteague sabino roans didn't have the roaning but had the big blazes and socks. A couple of the foals were also tobiano and had their white changed or boosted by having sabino. It can resemble classic roan but sabino roans do not have the dark head and legs found on classic roans, which is testable.
Sabino roan was briefly found in the Chincoteague Pony. The last living sabino roan in the CVFC feral herd was a chestnut named Strawberry Lady, better known as Rosie, who died in 2008. She is thought to be related to the mare A Touch of Dust, better known as Peaches. They may have been siblings, but the current thought is they were mother and daughter. Another mare was a bay named Rags to Riches, who died 2007.
There were other sabino roans in the past Virginia herd and also sabino roans in the Maryland herd. Three stallions described as roan were transferred from the Maryland herd in 1988: M12AI, M16/John, and Killer. The well known Maryland stallion Scotty was a chestnut tobiano sabino roan and a brother to M12AI.

Bayside Farm in Berlin, Maryland had two sabino roan Welsh Pony stallions in the 1960s. The stallions were Farnley Morning Star and Farnley Sun Star. It had been rumored that the roan on Assateague came from a Farnley bred Welsh Pony bred to Chincoteague mares. This cannot be confirmed, but it does present a possible theory for the source.
Bay sabino roan mare. The roaning plus her markings indicate sabino rather than splashed white.
