Mixed or compounded pinto is when a pony has more than one pinto pattern. It's often very difficult to determine visually which and how many pinto patterns a horse carries. Commonly a tobiano that also has another pinto pattern is called a tovero. The combination of pinto patterns can have many different outcomes when interacting to creating more white and others appear to blend into the other pattern due to their minimalness. The expression of multiple pinto patterns can result in unusual looking patterns and markings. The popular medicine hat markings are a result of compounded pinto.
Tobiano splashed whites are very common in Chincoteagues. It usually causes the pony to have more white. Splashed white will also frequently break apart the tobiano markings and make the pattern more complex. However, just as often the influence of splashed white on tobiano cannot be easily visually seen.
Splashed White and White 20 was found on the same pony via testing who has minimal white. W34, W35, EDXW2, and EDXW3 were found on the same pony who has no white.
