Cryptic tobianos are tobiano pintos but have very little or no white spots on their body. They will usually have white leg markings, but less than is expected from a tobiano or even from a minimal tobiano. Cryptic is suppressing the amount of white that tobiano is putting on the pony. More obvious pinto foals from cryptic tobiano parents are sometimes called cropouts.
It isn't known exactly how it's inherited and there isn't a test for it. But we can see how cryptic likely genetic in several of our Chincoteague Pony families.

Buckskin cryptic tobiano as a foal and as an adult. Her only white is on her rump, right side of her withers, and on her legs. Dam is also a minimal tobiano and has produced them.
